If you are looking for a night out with friends in Central London without the expense of having dinner, then how about this as an idea. I was recently invited to meet some friends and fellow bloggers at the Athenaeum Hotel in Piccadilly to sample a selection of puddings. Slightly odd you may think, but baking is all the rage and so the Athenaeum has caught the zeitgeist and created a nightly pudding parlour in the garden room of the hotel. The setting is a stylish and cosy area of sofas and low tables where you can kick off your high heels or loosen your ties ( and belts!) and relax while sampling a variey of puddings, cakes and jellies accompanied by a glass – oh OK probably more than one glass – of pudding wine.
The evening I went there were fruit tartlets, mince pies, slices of Christmas pudding, chocolate brownies, tiny rhubarb crumbles, champagne jellies and amazing chocolate mousses in pure chocolate shells.
The winner of the Great British Bake Off, Edd Kimber, has also been brought in to create a unique pudding every month.
You could try as many puds as you wanted for £10 or £15 with a glass of pudding wine, so it’s a great place to take anyone who has a sweet tooth or anyone who can never quite decide what they want from the menu.
The parlour is open between 8pm and 11pm every night apart from Sundays and you don’t have to book. Struck me it would be a great place for an evening business meeting, or to meet with girlfriends, or on a date, or to take your parents ( though probably not your kids). The hotel itself is also very stylish and a short walk from Hyde Park Corner. What’s not to like as they say.
