Synchronised swimming – Britain takes bronze

It’s a sport that doesn’t get much publicity, but it’s worth knowing that these 10 fantastic synchronised swimmers won a bronze medal for Britain in the European championships today.

If you think synchronised swimming is about making pretty patterns in the water, imagine instead a team of gymnasts or ballerinas doing  the main part of their routines upside down with their heads under water so they can’t breathe.

These women train eight hours a day, six days a week and today they got their reward –  a bronze medal in the team free combination synchronised swimming at the LEN European Champions Cup in Sheffield.

Although synchronised swimming is now an Olympic sport this particular class is not included, but it should give them all some extra confidence for 2012. This was Britain’s first European synchro medal since the 1990s.
